Understanding Age Calculation in Different Cultures
Age calculation varies across cultures, with different methods used to determine a person’s age. The most common system, used in most Western countries, calculates age by increasing it on a person’s birthday. For example, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old, and they will turn 4 on their next birthday.
In some cultures, age is calculated by counting years with or without including the current year. For instance, a person described as being 20 years old is considered to be in their twenty-first year of life. In one traditional Chinese age system, a person is considered 1 year old at birth, and their age increases at the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than on their birthday. For example, a baby born one day before the Chinese New Year would be considered 2 years old just two days later, despite being only 2 days old.
Calculating age can sometimes be confusing when dealing with months and days, especially if the starting date is at the end of a month. For instance, from February 20 to March 20 is clearly one month. However, calculating age from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022, can yield two different results. If we consider February 28 to March 28 as one month, then the age difference is one month and three days. Alternatively, if both February 28 and March 31 are regarded as the end of the month, the result is one month. Both interpretations are valid due to the different number of days in each month. For consistency, our calculations follow the first method.
